Many members of the Yao people group have come to faith in Christ over the past 18 months, leading to a rise in Islamist attacks on Christians in the region. “Tensions have reached a new level over the last part of this year,” a front-line worker shared. “Christian converts from Islam are being physically attacked and hunted.” The Islamic reaction to the spread of the gospel is occurring in other parts of Malawi as well, where Muslims are permitting access to water sources only to those who convert to Islam. In one area, a mob of Muslim extremists attacked and destroyed a church and the home of a local pastor after discovering outreach materials intended to share Christ with Muslims; that pastor is now in hiding. Pray for peace for this pastor and others in his community who are being targeted for advancing the gospel among Muslims. Pray for the Yao believers to continue to reach their people with the good news about Jesus Christ despite the increase in opposition, and pray that the oppressors will find faith in Christ.
