Richard Wurmbrand was committed to glorifying God alone, not pledging his loyalty to a Communist government like many around him.
Between 1945 and 1947, Richard distributed 1 million Gospels to Russian troops, often disguising the books as Communist propaganda. He also helped arrange the smuggling of Gospels into Russia.
Then on Feb. 29, 1948, his life was changed when he was arrested by the secret police.
His crimes? Leading Christian worship and witnessing, both of which were illegal under Romania’s atheistic Communist regime.
Meeting in homes, in basements and in the woods — sometimes daring to preach on public street corners — these faithful Christians persisted in their witness, knowing full well the ultimate cost of their actions.
- Richard spent a total of 14 years in prison. He was tortured, beaten and locked in solitary confinement.
- His wife, Sabina, spent three years in prison, including many months in a labor camp, nearly freezing to death as she and other prisoners worked on the Danube Canal. She was repeatedly told that her husband had died behind bars.
But Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand had an unshakable faith in Christ. Neither of them gave up hope, and neither of them would stop talking about Jesus.
Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, whose body bore the scars of 14 years of torture and suffering for Christ in Communist prisons, witnessed the indomitable courage and persistent faith of persecuted Christian believers.
Following his release, he devoted his life to being a voice for persecuted Christians so others within the body of Christ might serve them and be inspired by their examples of bold faith. The Wurmbrands’ testimony sparked a global movement of support for persecuted Christians that has endured for half a century.
And now, their inspiring story is told on the DVD Tortured for Christ — The Movie. We would love to send you a copy as a way of thanking you for your generous donation today.
Your faith will be encouraged as you see how the light of Christ continued to shine from the hearts of those totally committed to Him inside the darkest prison cells.
