VOM: 140,000 Bibles for China
On June 10, 2009 Shi Weihan was sentanced to three years in prison in China. His crime? He "violated the regulations of the state in printing illegal publications," according to Shi's official indictment in Chinese courts. In reality, Shi was a Christian bookstore owner whose Holy Spirit Trading Company voluntarily printed Bibles and Christian literature to give away to Chinese Christians.
After his arrest, Chinese police confiscated more than 140,000 Bibles and other Christian literature from his printing offices. That's hundreds of thousands of pieces of God's word that will never reach their intended readers.
For more than 30 years VOM has helped Christians like Shi Weihan spread the gospel in communist China. This includes supplying Christian literature and, of course, Bibles. But recently many prominent Christians have criticized those who deliver Bibles into China. They cite Amity Printing Company, the only Bible printing facility officially sanctioned by the Chinese government. According to its own press releases Amity printed 6 million Bibles last year for Chinese Christians. But in a country with 1.3 Billion people and an estimated 10,000 people becoming Christians each day, a paltry 6 million Bibles a year isn't enough.
