Does VOM have a doctrinal statement or Statement of Faith?

The Voice of the Martyrs’ Statement of Faith:

  1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father where He intercedes for us, in His present rule as Head of the Church, and in His personal return in power and glory.
  4. We believe that all men and women are lost and face the judgment of God, that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation, and that repentance of sin and faith in Jesus Christ is necessary for regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
  5. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, whose indwelling enables the Christian to live a godly life.
  6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved unto the resurrection of eternal life in the presence of our Lord, and the lost unto the resurrection of damnation and eternal punishment.
  7. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ and that all true believers are members of His body, the Church.
  8. We believe that we must dedicate ourselves to prayer, to the service of our Lord, to His authority over our lives, and to the ministry of evangelism.

Is Pastor Wurmbrand still involved with the ministry?

No. Pastor Wurmbrand passed away on February 17, 2001, joining his wife Sabina in eternity. Until the end of his life he was a prayer warrior on behalf of the persecuted church. The Voice of the Martyrs continues to follow the vision that Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand established for service to our brothers and sisters in restricted nations.

How do I send my letter to someone in prison?

Go to our website Prisoner Alert, an online letter-writing tool where we post biographies of Christians who have been imprisoned for their faith.

Follow the instructions to compose your letter from the prescribed phrases and scripture verses. The site will translate your letter into the language of the prisoner for you to print out, and then you can mail it to the provided address.

You may also choose to "Be an Advocate" and write letters to government officials in the prisoner’s home country, asking them for justice on behalf of our persecuted family in their country.

May I send small gifts or money to prisoners?

We have never heard of gifts or money getting through to prisoners in a restricted nation. However, if you feel God wants you to try and send something, please do. Several years ago we asked VOM readers to send a Vietnamese pastor chocolate bars while he was in prison. We thought thousands of chocolate bars were sent to him, but he later shared with our staff that he never received any of them in the prison. However he was released early and allowed to return to his family! Pray and follow God’s leading.

What should I write to government officials?

  1. Write a short, clear message.
  2. Be Polite. Remember you are representing Jesus Christ.
  3. State your general concern for persecuted believers.
  4. Cite some specific facts in your letter, such as names, arrest dates or specific prisons.
  5. Do NOT write about politics or the government.
Here are some examples of the kinds of things some people have written in the past:
Dear Sir: We are thankful that your law in Vietnam allows freedom of religion. However, we heard that a man named __________ was put in the prison at ____________. We are concerned about this and about his welfare. We are praying for this man, and for your country. Please give your attention to this matter. Thank you very much.

To Whom It May Concern: Last month, ____________, a Christian from [city], was arrested and charged with [the charge]. He was given a [length of sentence] prison sentence. This person is not a criminal; he is simply a Christian trying to follow God’s word. Please release him immediately. Thank you.

Dear Sir: Last year, __________, was arrested for __________. The story of this case has been circulated around the world and thousands of Christians know about it. We are praying for him. Please release him immediately, and drop charges. We are praying for you as a leading spokesman for your country.

You can find out addresses to government officials on our website Prisoner Alert, included in the biography page of each Christian prisoner we are currently tracking.

Why write government officials?

Petitions, e-mails, letters and telegrams show officials that there are people who know and care about what happens to persecuted Christians inside their countries. Some conditions may be improved as a result. In some cases, we have seen prisoners released early after their case received international attention. If the authorities think no one cares, the Christians receive more harassment. Do not underestimate the power of your letter.

How can I know that the blankets and Bibles I send get to the right people?

The Voice of the Martyrs sends trained staff from one of our offices to make sure that goods and aid are distributed to the people that it was intended for. We also work with local church leaders inside restricted nations to ensure the safe and correct delivery of aid.

Can you give any personal information about someone I read about in the newsletter? (i.e., wife's name, number of children, birthdays, anniversaries, age.)

Sometimes we have this information and can release it, but in many cases we cannot release this information in order to protect the family and the person we have written about in the newsletter. In some cases, we must use a pseudonym or change certain details in the story in order to protect them.

Could you send me the name and address of a person in a restricted nation? I would like to have a penpal.

Because of the nature of VOM’s work people served by The Voice of the Martyrs cannot always be contacted by people in other nations. In some nations, Christians don't even have mailboxes. In some closed countries, it is often dangerous for people to receive mail from Christians in another country. They may be persecuted when officials screen the letters. In some nations where Christians are often very poor, it can take two days' work in the fields to earn enough money to buy one postage stamp.

You may, however, want to "write a letter" to someone you have read about in the VOM or Kids of Courage newsletter to help you pray for them. Tell the person about your hopes for their safety, about Bible verses that might encourage them, and other things you would tell them if you could send the letter. Then pray about each of the things you have written, asking God to bless and protect your "pen pal." Tuck the letter into your Bible, where it can serve as a reminder to pray for persecuted Christians.

How many countries is Voice of the Martyrs working in?

The Voice of the Martyrs completed projects to help persecuted Christians in 46 restricted or hostile nations during 2008, along with four countries where Christians are rebuilding after Communist oppression.

I am interested in going overseas to help. Do you take missions trips?

Because of the difficulty of working in restricted and hostile nations, VOM does not sponsor mission trips. If you are interested in a mission trip, you may contact Vision Beyond Borders. This group has worked with VOM in some nations, and does organize and sponsor trips into hostile and restricted nations.

I have just found out about The Voice of the Martyrs, can you tell me about your ministry?

Pastor Richard Wurmbrand founded VOM more than 40 years ago. He was in prison in Romania for 14 years for his faith in Christ. In the ’60s he and his family were ransomed out of Romania for $10,000 and came to the U.S. where he began traveling, educating the free world of the atrocities committed against Christians in Communist and other restricted countries. VOM's five main purposes are based on Hebrews 13:3. They are:

  1. To encourage and empower Christians to fulfill the Great Commission in areas of the world where they are persecuted for their involvement in propagating the gospel of Jesus Christ. We accomplish this by providing Bibles, literature, radio broadcasts, and other forms of aid.
  2. To give relief to the families of Christian martyrs in these areas of the world.
  3. To equip local Christians to win to Christ those persecutors who are opposed to the gospel in countries where believers are actively persecuted for their Christian witness.
  4. To undertake projects of encouragement, helping believers rebuild their lives and Christian witness in countries that have formerly suffered Communist oppression.
  5. To emphasize the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of atrocities committed against Christians and by remembering their courage and faith.
Read our newsletter to learn more about how VOM is helping the persecuted church worldwide. Sign up for the free newsletter here. (Free for U.S. residents. For foreign subscriptions the cost is $24 for air delivery.)

Does VOM accept clothing to send overseas?

Some clothing items can be inserted into Action Packs, which VOM delivers to Christians in restricted nations. At this time we are not accepting clothing items apart from the Action Pack program. If the need arises, we will write about it in our newsletter and/or on Persecution.com.

What is the best way to get blankets and Bibles to VOM?

Most of the time UPS has been the most cost effective shipping option. It is best to call them and ask for a recommendation. They will give you the size and weight restrictions. If you are shipping large quantities, please call a freight carrier, and again they can give you the size and weight restrictions.

What is the greatest need right now?

Needs around the world are constantly changing, please read our newsletter and updates on www.persecution.com to keep up with the needs. The greatest need is for prayer. It is prayer that changes things and moves the heart of God, and it is prayer that our persecuted brothers and sisters ask for before they ask for anything else.

Why do you spend so much on your newsletter for color and size?

One of our main purposes, as The Voice of the Martyrs, is to get the word out about the suffering church, to inform the world about persecution. Studies show that more people will respond to (pick up and read) a detailed color newsletter than one that is less detailed. Because of the large quantity of newsletters we are sending out, full color costs only a small fraction more per newsletter than black and white printing, but the photographic detail that it adds is priceless. The total cost of our newsletter including mailing cost is around 50 cents per copy.

Can I volunteer at VOM?

We always need volunteers who are willing to come to Bartlesville for a day or two, a week, a year, or anything in between. A limited amount of housing is available for volunteers on a first come, first serve basis, so advanced planning is essential. We have housing accommodations for singles, couples and even families who come to VOM headquarters. Before volunteering, you must first fill out a Volunteer Information Packet and return it to our volunteer office.

Do you have internships?

Yes, The Voice of the Martyrs does offer internships to students who have completed two years of college. If you are interested in learning more about internship opportunities, please contact our office for more information and an application packet.
